Geometric Optics

Over the past 5 years the Geometric Optics Group at the Institute has developed a body of mathematical work which has been published in peer-reviewed international journals. This work has attracted the attention of mathematicians, engineers, biologists and clinicians worldwide and has lead to numerous collaborative links with researchers in prestigious Institutions, both at home and abroad. The main collaborators for this proposal are currently based in:

University of Durham, England,
Trinity College, Dublin,
University College Dublin

While this research activity has revolved around basic research in mathematics, the range of applications of this work is now coming to the fore. This includes mathematical physics, computer graphics and biomedical imaging.

In the context of the newly established ITT Research Institute, the Group is actively working with the ITTRI in developing a vibrant research culture and helping to prioritize research activities in the Institute.

The Group, and research at ITT generally, received a significant boost when the Mathematics Applications Consortium for Science and Industry, of which the Group is a part, was announced as one of the two successful applicants in the SFI Mathematics Initiative. This €4.34 million, which will be disbursed over the next five years, aims to support mathematics with applications in science and industry.

In addition, the Group has recently attracted IRCSET funding for a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the research team – the first such Fellowship to be awarded to IT Tralee.

In 2007 the Group was awarded three years of funding under Science Foundation Ireland’s Research Frontiers Programme – the first time IT Tralee has been awarded such funding. This will allow the Group to recruit a further Postdoctoral researcher to work on their research.
