Work Placement/Applied Practice

The Work Placement / Applied Practice Programme

During their third year of study, the TV Radio & New Media Broadcasting students have the opportunity to spend a full semester working in the broadcasting industry or in broadcast related industries. It is an important period of their overall programme in a number of ways. Firstly, the students begin the following final year of study with a solid understanding of industry practices and have developed their own work ethos. Secondly, by spending an entire semester immersed in the professional broadcasting industry the students will have made valuable contacts that will ultimately be their industry colleagues in the years following their studies.

The programme is broken into two phases. The first phase deals with job searching and formal job applications. The second phase is dedicated entirely to working out inthe industry.

The emphasis is on training the students to find their placements and as such phase one is spent learning skills that will enable them to find employment. This includes the following.

  • Interview skills
  • CV preparation
  • Job searches
  • Industry awareness

On completion of the first stage, the student will have produced a top class CV and will have sat a simulated 'mock' interview with a panel made up of members from both the the broadcasting industry and Digital Media Centre itself . Past experience has shown this to be extremely valuable in preparing the student for any situations that might arise in a real world setting.

Applied Practice.

The Applied practice element is a recent addition to the programme. By choosing the Applied Practice route the student will not be working directly within a media company but will be providing creative services and content for an organisation deemed worthy by student and staff. This provides the student with a direct understanding of what it means to work in a freelance capacity within a direct client / producer relationship
