What is Music Technology

This course provides an excellent opportunity to explore musical creativity and production with computer applications. The course has been carefully constructed after wide discussion with creative and technical professionals in the music industry. It provides students with a very high level of technical skills and knowledge in the area of music technology, combined with the opportunity to develop their creative ability. The course focuses on developing the skills required to create content for music and digital media industries.

What are my career opportunities

Students will acquire competency in the theory and technologies associated with the fields of music composition and production, sound engineering and recording, music education, community music, sound for film/radio/TV/multimedia, audio post production, internet streaming, location sound recording, sound synthesis and design, audio for games, etc. The resulting graduate will have a cross-platform of skills including knowledge of music composition and of the computer applications associated with the music and audio for media industry.

Graduates will be able to compose and produce music for media and will also be qualified to seek employment in the technical areas of recording, audio postproduction and audio for games industries.


Other Information

Creativity and innovation are encouraged through the use of different methods of programme delivery and assessment such as interactive on-line learning, group discussions, critique sessions, workshops and presentations by speakers from industry, hands-on projects and studio work. An integral component of the degree is work placement in semester six (Year 3) of the programme, which will allow students gain experience in a commercial environment or alternatively students may choose to work as part of an internal design team creating digital content entries for national and international media awards.

What facilities are available?

Much of the work takes place in the Institute's dedicated multimedia Mac/PC laboratories, the ITT DigitalMedia Centre (a state-of-the-art digital production and post-production facility consisting of a TV studio, Recording Studio and Radio Studio and Multimedia Editing Suite).

Other Requirements

Satisfactory Garda Vetting is a mandatory part of registration for this programme. Failure to obtain satisfactory Garda Vetting will result in de-registration. Any offence and/or convictions arising after registration must be disclosed to the Institute immediately.The Institute reserves right to review the registration status of a student in light of additional information received subsequent to registration.
