What is the Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Performing Arts (Folk Theatre) about?

The BA (Hons) in Performing Arts Folk Theatre is a four year programme that incorporates the study of music, dance, theatre, drama, Irish culture, folklore, business and information technology. The course provides students with the ability to pursue a range of opportunities in the rapidly expanding area of cultural enterprise. The programme is offered in conjunction with Siamsa Tíre, the National Folk Theatre of Ireland, based in Tralee. From year 3 students can specialise in music or dance.

How is the course delivered?

The course is delivered through workshops, lectures and practical classes taught by a team of highly qualified professionals, practitioners and academics in the world of folk theatre. As part of the final year the students will have the opportunity to devise, produce, stage and market a full-length folk theatre performance.

What facilities are available?

The practical classes, performance projects and workshops all take place in Siamsa Tíre Theatre and Arts Centre in Tralee where there are state-of-the-art stage and technical facilities. Lectures are also held in the Institutes North Campus.

What are my career opportunities?

The course provides a solid grounding in music and dance together with a high level of proficiency in business management and arts administration. The programme will enable graduates to fill positions regionally, nationally and internationally in folk theatres and in tourism and heritage centres in the areas of performance, theatre management, direction/production, management/ administration, stage craft design, community arts, self-employment, media, cultural tourism, event management and education.

The BA Hons in Folk Theatre Studies course is run over the duration of four years in conjunction with Siamsa Tíre - the national folk Theatre of Ireland. As a performer you will learn and develop skills in Irish and Contemporary Dance and Music. Other subjects such as Irish Culture, Folklore and Business and Information Technology are taught which gives a person in the arts a greater advantage to engage in various areas in theatre be it on the stage or off. The highlight of the course I feel is in fourth year where you and your class create your very own show. From lighting design, choreography, musical composition, set and costume design, every aspect involved in putting together a large production comes into play. This course has provided me with a great understanding of how the theatre works.

Ciara Enright, Year 4 BA (Hons) in Folk Theare Studies.
