General Admission Requirements
Applicants must be 16 years of age or more on 1st January of year of entry to the course.
Applicants must satisfy one of the following general admission requirements:
Leaving Certificate or Equivalent Examinations
Higher Certificate
Applicants must achieve a pass in the Leaving Certificate or equivalent examinations, obtaining a minimum grade OD3 in English or Gaeilge, OD3 in Mathematics or a minimum grade of B2 in Foundation Level Mathematics and OD3 in three other subjects. Please note: Foundation Level Mathematics does not meet the minimum entry requirements for the following programmes:
- All Higher Certificate Programmes offered in the School of Engineering & Construction Studies
- Higher Certificate in Business (Advanced Business)
The minimum leaving certificate requirement is 5 Leaving Certificate Ordinary D ’s or an equivalent qualification (including English) for the following Higher Certificate Programmes:
- TL501 Higher Certificate in Arts in Culinary Arts
- TL502 Higher Certificate in Arts in Hospitality Studies
- Tl504 Higher Certificate in Arts in Bar Supervision
- Tl505 Higher Certificate in Business in Front Office Management
Degree (Level 7 National Framework of Qualifications)
OD3 in English or Gaeilge and Mathematics and three other subjects.
Please note: that a minimum grade of B2 in Foundation Level Mathematics fulfils the minimum entry requirements in Mathematics for the following programmes:
- Bachelor of Arts in Social Care TL190
- Bachelor of Arts in Youth and Community Work Practice TL195
- Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Care and Education TL165
Honours Degree (Level 8 National Framework of Qualifications)
Applicants must achieve a pass in the Leaving Certificate or equivalent examinations obtaining two HC3s and four OD3s. Candidates are required to obtain a minimum of OD3 in English or Gaeilge and Mathematics. Please note: that a minimum grade of B2 in Foundation Level Mathematics fulfils the minimum entry requirements in Mathematics for the following programmes:
- Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Early Childhood Care and Education TL160
- Bachelor of Business (Honours) TL285
HOW TO APPLY THROUGH THE CAO
CAO APPLICANTS (1ST YEAR APPLICATIONS)
The Institute evaluates applications through the CAO system in accordance with the following categories:
STANDARD APPLICANTS
- Leaving Certificate
- Higher Education Links Scheme
- Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme (LCVP)
- Leaving Certificate Applied Programme (LCAP)
- International students
- Craft or other qualifications
STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES
Students with disabilities may declare a disability on page one of the CAO Application Form. The CAO will then forward Supplementary Information Forms
requesting further details. IT, Tralee requires the Supplementary Information Forms to be returned to the CAO no later than 20th April 2010 to allow for full
consideration and consultation on your support needs.
GARDA VETTING
The Institute provides a number of programmes where students are required to do a placement, as a mandatory part of the programme. To ensure the protection of the public and to justify public trust and confidence, the Institute is committed to ensuring that only suitable candidates are allowed to undertake work placements which involve contact with children or vulnerable adults. To ensure that only suitable students are sent on work placement, the Institute requires students registering on the following programmes to complete the Garda Vetting Application Form:
- TL481 Bachelor of Science in Health and Leisure
- TL482 Bachelor of Science in Health and Leisure with Massage
- TL160 Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Early Child Care and Education
- TL165 Bachelor of Arts in Early Child Care and Education
- TL190 Bachelor of Arts in Social Care
- TL195 Bachelor of Arts in Youth and Community Work Practice
- TL110 Bachelor of Science (Honours) in General Nursing
- TL115 Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Mental Health Nursing
- TL183 Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Adventure Tourism Management
- TL187 Bachelor of Arts in Adventure Tourism Management
Satisfactory Garda Vetting is a mandatory part of registration for these programmes. Failure to obtain satisfactory Garda Vetting will result in de-registration. Any offence and/or convictions arising after the student has been registered must be disclosed to the Institute immediately. The Institute reserves right to review the registration status of a student in light of additional information received subsequent to registration.

CAO POINTS SYSTEMS
Applicants are evaluated on the basis of the national points scheme as detailed in the CAO Handbook. Points are counted for the six best subjects. Points are counted from only one sitting of the Leaving Certificate.
