The Honours Degree programme - Adapted Physical Activity (APA) course will equip students with specialist knowledge and experience in working with people with disabilities. They will be equipped to work in a variety of settings including health and leisure centres, sports camps, health promotion, mainstream and special needs schools, community centres, clinical settings, residential and day care services. Adapted physical activity course students will have experience working in groups and on a one to one basis with adults and children with sensory, physical, intellectual, multiple and severe disabilities.

The Health and Leisure Studies  Adapted physical activity course has continued to be innovative in the approach to teaching methods, community engagement, learning, accreditation, relevance and breadth of skills. Students can expect to become more confident in professional skills, life skills and in communicating the theoretical basis for concepts in health and leisure.

Adapted physical activity course graduates will have specialist knowledge in: communication and teaching methods; contraindications of various activities for specific disabilities; disability sports and adapting mainstream activities to suit individual needs; assessment methods; individualised programming and planning; inclusive practices in group settings; training other professionals to assist in physical activity settings; aquatic rehabilitation; working and liaising with professionals of the multidisciplinary care team in the on-going care, support and rehabilitation of people with disabilities; policies and legislation in relation to disability and sport/recreation and event planning and promotion.
