What is Animal Bioscience

The B.Sc. in Animal Bioscience couuse is a degree in the biological sciences, with a major focus on animal health, disease and diagnostics.  The animal health sector, globally, is experiencing significant growth due to a surge in demand for diagnostics to underpin animal health and disease.

Why study Animal Bioscience at IT, Tralee

The B.Sc. in Animal Bioscience course is an NFQ Level 7, three-year degree programme.  The course is delivered by leading life-scientists and veterinarians, and will provide you with an understanding of the key elements of biology, health and disease diagnostics in both production animals (cattle, sheep, pig and poultry) and companion animals (dogs, cats and horses). 

What are my career opportunities

Graduates of the B.Sc. in Animal Bioscience will have the skills to work in animal diagnostics laboratories, national and international sales companies of animal health products, and within the animal biopharmaceutical industry.  Animal health is a global sector, with global opportunities.  This programme does not entitle graduates to work as a veterinary practitioner or veterinary nurse.

Other information

Holders of equivalent qualifications to the Irish Leaving Certificate will be evaluated to determine equivalence.

Delivery of the programme’s emphasis on animal health and animal diagnostics is supported by

  • practical hands-on experience and interaction with animals throughout the first two years;
  • a dedicated internship programme in year three;


Students who have successfully completed the B.Sc. in Animal Bioscience at IT Tralee will have the opportunity to apply for entry into the BSc (Honours) in Veterinary Bioscience at IT Tralee.
