Civil and Construction

A construction manager is the person responsible for production of a building project, from taking over the site to the handover of the completed project. Delivering a project to a specified quality, on time and within budget is the mantra of the construction industry. She/he has to ensure the availability of appropriate resources and materials and the quality of workmanship in order to achieve this.

Excellent technical knowledge of construction is required together with a very high level of management skills because it is a sector in which new legislation, regulations and technology are increasingly causing significant change. The work is interesting, always challenging and invariably fulfilling.

MTU started delivering Construction Management Level 8 Degrees 20 years ago and this BSc (Hons) in Construction Management is being re-launched in response to industry demand for professional construction managers. The course is broad based which ensures that graduates have the flexibility to work in many different environments. Graduates become competent in management, construction technology, building services, quantity surveying, surveying, design, professional practice and IT including 2D/3D CAD and BIM.

MTU have experienced, full-time staff to deliver the programme and help students to develop to their full potential. Key features of the programme include a work placement, an individual capstone project and a yearlong integrated project which simulates working in a professional construction management design team.

Construction management graduates at both are highly sought after in Ireland and there is currently a shortage of suitably qualified construction managers. Employment opportunities exist not only with contractors but also with consultants, manufacturers & suppliers of products related to the construction sector and self-employed. People with a proven track record can demand high salaries and can reach senior positions quickly.

Many construction companies are now operating in world markets. A degree in construction management opens up opportunities for world travel whether with an Irish firm with foreign contracts or with oversea firms.
