This is a graduate conversion course in IT - Applicants who have achieved a pass grade in a level 8 award in a non-computing discipline are eligible for entry to the programme.
What is Computing
The Higher Diploma in Science in Computing aims to provide a career route into the IT sector for graduates whose primary degree is in another discipline. The Institute of Technology, Tralee recognises the need to provide continuing professional development opportunities for graduates in the region. A skills gap in the knowledge economy has been identified and the relaunch of this programme represents an instantaneous response to market conditions for graduates at this time. In one academic calendar year, this course will provide the non-IT graduate with core skills in the area of software development, networks, web design and databases. Each stream will allow entry onto a level 9 Masters Courses as follows:
- Software Development can lead onto the MSc in Computing
- Educational Technologies leads onto the MSc in Educational Technologies

What are my career opportunities
The programme will provide graduates with the ability to adapt to different work and social environments which would provide for full professional career development with habits of learning, understanding and structured, critical and lateral thinking. The Software Development stream will give graduates the knowledge, skills and competencies required to pursue careers in software development. The Healthcare Informatics stream will give graduates the knowledge, skills and competencies (i) in the modeling, storage, communication and use of information in healthcare and (ii) to initiate and manage projects which require the collaboration of health and information technology professionals. The Educational Technologies stream will provide graduates with the knowledge, skills and competencies in (i) educational concepts and theories and styles underpinning applications of information technology in teaching & learning and (ii) of the multimedia and digital content development process.
What facilities are available?
Students have access to state-of-the-art computer laboratories including specialist labs for multimedia, network administration, computer architecture and software development. The Institute has a purpose built digital editing suite which allows students to edit video and sound files they have created in their project work. All computing students have access to e-learning systems (WebCT). The computing department in ITT leads the higher education sector in Ireland in the use of e-learning in its courses.

The Institutes policy in relation to non standard applicants will apply. This course may be delivered on a full-time basis and consists of a combination of lectures, practicals, tutorials, projects, presentations and speakers from industry.
