What are your career options?

Graduates of Health and Leisure work in a variety of areas including health and wellness and leisure centres, sports development organisations/sports governing bodies, health promotion agencies, health farms, swimming and leisure pools, fitness centres, outdoor education centres, teaching PE and working with people with disabilities. Graduates of the BSc (Hons) Physical Education Studies who take a Graduate Diploma in Education can become secondary school PE teachers.

Q. Can I do PE teaching with a BSc (Honours) in Physical Education Studies?
A. Graduates who take the BSc (Hons) in the PE Studies stream are eligible to apply to the Graduate Diploma in Physical Education which is currently being run at the University of Limerick and on completion will be qualified to teach PE in Secondary Schools. Places are restricted on this course and are filled on the basis of merit.

Q. Is work experience included in this course?
A. Work placement is an integral part of our Health and Leisure programmes. Students are offered a wide range of exciting positions for which they can apply. The add-on ordinary degree includes a four month work experience placement and the add-on BSc (Honours) in Health, Fitness and Leisure Studies includes a six month work placement.

What is Higher Certificate in Science in Health & Leisure Studies?

It is the study of:

- activity leadership and physical education;
- health promotion;
- exercise science, including physical fitness and performance training;
- sports development and management.

It provides students with outlets at higher certificate, ordinary degree, honours degree and post-graduate level.

How is the course delivered?

The course has a significant practical dimension (40%) that students find challenging but very attractive. End of year results are determined through a combination of coursework, projects, practical assessments and final end of year exams.

The Institute has a quality gym, aerobics area, fitness and performance suite, physiology laboratory and massage room. It uses the facilities of local leisure complexes and outdoor education centres as required.

These include activity management and leadership within the leisure and sporting environment, project management, leisure facility and event management, physical fitness programme management, health promotion, programme development and delivery, education, training and coaching techniques and research techniques.
