IT, Tralee Appoints Acting President
The Institute of Technology, Tralee is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Oliver Murphy as Acting President. This follows the appointment of the current President Michael Carmody as President of Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology.
Dr. Murphys appointment was ratified at a meeting of the Institute’s Governing Body on last Wednesday, February 2nd 2011.
A native of Limerick City, Dr. Murphy joined IT, Tralee when he was appointed Lecturer in Mathematics and Statistics at the School of Business and Social Studies. In 1996 he was appointed Head of Department of Business and Social Studies, a position he held for a five year period. In 2001, he joined the senior executive management team of the Institute after his appointment to the position of College Registrar.
Dr. Murphy completed his B.Ed in Mathematics and Education at Mary Immaculate College and graduated with an MA in Mathematics and Statistics from UCC in 1986. He was conferred with his Ph.D in Statistics from UCC in 1995.
In outlining his vision for the Institute, Dr Murphy welcomed the publication of the National Strategy for Higher Education, which in his view provides an excellent framework to ensure the continued growth and development of the Institute.
“Securing University status for the ITT is achievable within the framework outlined in the National Strategy document. The outlook for the Institute is very positive. Our CAO applications and our portfolio of programmes are increasing annually. Our international student numbers continue to grow and our research activity is expanding. Given the calibre of staff at the Institute and the excellent working relationships we have with our stakeholders, I am confident that the Institute will continue to play a pivotal role in the future economic development of the region.” stated Dr Murphy.
