IT Tralee hosts annual EU Debate on Wednesday February 23rd 2011
The Institute of Technology, Tralee’s 8th Annual EU Debate takes place on Wednesday 23rd February in L108 (Solás Building) at the Institutes North Campus at 7.30 p.m.
The motion this year is "This House Believes That Ireland Has Lost Its Sovereignty".
Two teams representing the Higher Certificate in Business Studies and the Bachelor of Business Studies, will debate the motion in what promises to be a lively exchange of views.
Proposing the motion and representing the Higher Certificate in Business Studies are Vilde Grigaityte, Michael Kelly and Gary O'Connor. Representing the Bachelor of Business Studies team and opposing the motion are Katie Moloney, Louise O' Connor and Alexander Akinyemi. Each of the students are in their second year of study at the Institute.
The guest speaker for the event is Executive Director of European Movement Ireland, Andrea Pappin who will give a presentation on intern graduate opportunities in EU Institutions and Agencies, as well graduate employment opportunities available in private companies and NGOs. Her visit to the college is part of European Movement Ireland's National Graduate Jobs Campaign to inform students about the range of career opportunities open to Irish graduates in Europe. One of the main challenges Ireland faces in the EU establishment and systems, is that within a decade the country will be under-represented in the EU civil service. Given the challenging times all graduates face in terms of securing employment, attending the debate should provide students with a greater understanding of how the EU operates and how job opportunities can be identified and pursued.
This event, which is open to the public, is sponsored by the Department of Foreign Affairs, Communicating Europe Initiative with the support of the European Commission (Dublin) and the European Movement Ireland. Admission to the event is free, but pre-booking is advisable to Ms. Carol Fitzgerald 066 71 91993.
