Institute of Technology, Tralee Appoints President
The Institute of Technology, Tralee is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Oliver Murphy as President. Dr. Murphys appointment was ratified at a meeting of the Institute’s Governing Body on Tuesday June 2nd 2011 for a five year period.
A native of Limerick City, Dr. Murphy joined IT, Tralee when he was appointed Lecturer in Mathematics and Statistics at the School of Business and Social Studies.
In 1996 he was appointed Head of Department of Business and Social Studies, a position he held for a five year period. In 2001, he joined the senior executive management team of the Institute after his appointment to the position of College Registrar.
In outlining his vision for the Institute, Dr Murphy acknowledged the unprecedented times in which we all now live, but is positive in his outlook for the future of the Institute.
“It is my firm belief that achieving university status for the ITT will be a key driver for the future economic development of the region and will further enhance international opportunities including student recruitment and collaborative research. The development of a Sports Academy at the North Campus, which will also serve as the headquarters for the CARA National Adapted Physical Activity Centre, is a further priority area in addition to further consolidating and extending relations with Institute stakeholder groups.”
Dr. Murphy completed his B.Ed in Mathematics and Education at Mary Immaculate College and graduated with an MA in Mathematics and Statistics from UCC in 1986. He was conferred with his Ph.D in Statistics from UCC in 1995. Dr. Murphy has been the Acting President of the Institute since the start of February 2011.
