This week saw the launch of The IT, Tralee's new Mature Student Study Skills guide.   The guide forms part of a larger project resourced by the Dormant Accounts Fund which provides learning support for mature students at the Institute.

Almost one thousand mature students are currently enrolled at IT, Tralee on both full-time and part-time programmes. Some of these students enter the Institute directly via the CAO, others through the extensive links the Institute has developed with organisations such as Kerry Education Service and FAS where students progress to the Institute through mapped education pathways.

With 25% of all students at IT, Tralee falling within the mature s tudent category the Institute has the highest mature student participant rate across all Higher Educational Institutes in Ireland. Speaking at the launch Dr. Oliver Murphy, President, stated New Mature Student Study Skills Guide "Coming from a huge diversity of backgrounds, mature students bring experience from enterprise, employment and community to their studies and contribute greatly to the life of the Institute. This booklet, Mature Students Study Skills Guide, has been published as a resource for students, introducing new areas of learning and referring students to further learning opportunities and resources at the IT, Tralee to help ensure their successful completion of their third level studies.   I am sure that this guide will prove a useful resource for all of our mature learners."

The Learning Support Service within the Institute, and this guide, are part of Institute's recognition of the need to produce flexible, adaptable and resourceful learners able to cope successfully with the challenges of higher education and beyond. Entering third level study challenges students to develop new ways of learning, new communication skills, new forms of writing, new ways of approaching information and new ways of managing their time.
