Teagasc Agricultural Course Thu, May 11, 2006

The Institute of Technology, Tralee organises in conjunction with Teagasc the delivery of the 180 hour course in agriculture (sometimes referred to as the Green Cert) on a biannual basis.

If a student has 2 years completed at an IT, this certificate will qualify the recipient for a number of important tax exemptions/aids if he/she decides to get involved in farming either in a full time or part time capacity at some future date.

These include reliefs from stamp duty, inheritance tax and qualification for installation aid.

The course is delivered in the institute by Teagasc staff outside of normal college term times.

In the past this has taken the form of:

  • 1 week - mid term break
  • 1 week - before/after Christmas (during holidays)
  • 1 week - rag week
  • 1 week – Easter
  • 1 week - after end of year exams.

This is only a guideline but the eventual timetable should not differ significantly. The fee for the course is approx €800 (payable to Teagasc. This is a good opportunity for interested students to gain this certificate as it can be difficult to get suitable courses at a later stage.
