IT HCT Students gain Top International Scholarships

Two Students from the Institute of Technology have been chosen to take part in two International Scholarships. They are Thomas Enright a 2nd year Culinary Arts student at the Institute from Listowel and Keith Pigott also a 2nd year Culinary Arts student, Keith is from Limerick originally but now living in Tralee. Also Two Students from a possible eleven at the Institute of Technology have been chosen for two €1,000 Scholarships kindly donated to the Department by the Kerry Branch of the Irish Hotel Federation. They are Padraig Hennessey a 2nd year Culinary Arts student at the Institute originally from Newcastle West, County Limerick, but now living in Dingle and Cezary Michniewicz a 1st year Culinary Arts student, Cezary is from Poland originally but now living in Lixnaw, County Kerry. The scholarships are provided to the students for further educational and career development.

Keith been chosen to take part in a two week Scholarship in Germany which will take place in June 2012, the Scholarship was first prize in an in house Pastry competition organised by Chef Daniel Browne, Keith will travel to Germany where he will have the opportunity to work and learn on the Pastry department in the five Star Hotel Bad Schachen located in Lindau on Lake Constance in Germany. The Executive Chef of this Hotel is Liam McMahon who originally from Dublin is part of a team which deliver a week of Master classes each year to the 2nd Year Culinary Arts Students at IT Tralee.

HCT International Scholarships Picture 1 Thomas has been chosen for a three month Scholarship to Johnson and Wales University in Rhode Island USA which is sponsored by Failte Ireland. Johnson and Wales is one of Americas most prestigious Universities in Hospitality and Culinary Education. Thomas will have the opportunity to learn in the new 40 million dollar state of the art facilities in Johnson and Wales. This Scholarship is worth in the Region of €12,000.

Emer Moynihan representative of the IHF in Kerry said that the calibre of all eleven students was very high and that it was not an easy task to pick the top two. She commented that one of the biggest challenges today for the sector is finding staff, but she would have no hesitation in employing any of the candidates’ and commended both the students and staff at IT Tralee for their high standards.

When asked Padraig, Cezary, Thomas and Keith said, these Scholarships will provide us with great opportunities and they will certainly help us in our future careers and for Thomas and Keith it will give us a great insight into the culinary industry from an International perspective. We thank the IHF, Failte Ireland and IT Tralee and for this wonderful opportunities.
