IT Tralee needs your support
A word from the President
Since our establishment in 1977, the Institute has grown substantially and we now have 3,500 students, both full-time and part-time, studying programmes from Higher Certificate to PhD.
We have had many achievements in that time, both academic and sporting. In the last number of years the Institute has worked towards the goal of creating a centre of excellence for sport that is inclusive of everybody. We realised that goal this year when the doors of the Kerry Sports Academy were opened.
The new Kerry Sports Academy boasts state of the art equipment including a hydrotherapy pool, a sports arena, aerobics & dance studios, a lecture theatre, classrooms and three specialised gyms including a high performance gym and an exercise physiology lab.
In order to secure the growth and sustainability of the Kerry Sports Academy we need your support. On the 18th of November, students will be asked to vote on a plebiscite to accept a €95 annual charge for membership of the Kerry Sports Academy. At present membership of the gym costs €90 per semester or €180 for the academic year. We realise that this is expensive and often a barrier to students becoming members, however this is the lowest possible threshold we can offer with an opt-in membership. That is why we are proposing that every student pay €95 per year as part of their student contribution charge which is equal to less than €2 per week. For this charge every registered student will have unlimited access to the gym facilities, year round, during opening hours.
There are many other benefits to voting in favour of this plebiscite, including longer opening hours, better equipment and access to a diverse range of fitness classes. I am pleased that this proposal has the support of your Students’ Union and I ask that you join them in supporting this initiative by voting “Yes” on November 18th.
A word from the SU President
Third level study provides us with lots of opportunities - the chance to get the qualification we want, our personal as well as our academic development, the opportunity to make friends for life, amongst many other things.
The Students’ Union is very clear that it puts student’s health and wellbeing at the top of its priority list. For many years we have been frustrated by the lack of accessibility to the type of facilities expected of a modern Irish third level college, but finally with the opening of the Kerry Sports Academy IT Tralee students have access to a world class gym where they can enjoy sports or pursue fitness ambitions, and facilities for societies to host new events, right here on the north campus. I believe strongly that these new facilities will do wonders for the physical and mental wellbeing of the student body.
I very much appreciate the demands on student finances, it is an issue myself and the vice-presidents deal with on a daily basis. However, at an annual cost of €95 I do not believe that it is a barrier that cannot be overcome, where else would you get a full membership to a state of the art gym and other facilities for less than €2 per week, which is just a little more than your morning coffee!? As President of the Students’ Union, I am supporting the proposed introduction of a €95 fee for full membership of the Kerry Sports Academy gym and access to the KSA facilities. I am asking for your support on November 18th by voting “Yes” for this proposal.
Jennifer Healy – IT Tralee Sports Officer
The construction of the Kerry Sports Academy on campus represented a hugely significant milestone for Sport & Physical Activity in IT Tralee. We now have a world class facility as a base for our Sports Programme, one that will have a massive impact on the development & provision of sport for all our students regardless of ability. The facilities of the Kerry Sports Academy also have the potential to host many sporting, cultural, musical, charitable & society activities.
Now our next step is to secure access to the facility for all students and we can do this by voting YES on Monday 18th November.A YES vote will ensure that all students will have priority access to the facilities of the Kerry Sports Academy all year around.
Kevin Ross – IT Tralee Societies Officer
While Kerry Sports Academy is primarily seen as a building for sporting activities. If you vote “Yes” on the 18th November the societies office will have priority access to this state of the art building.
Imagine being able to hold drama performances, concerts or even an exhibition in Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann Dúchas centre which is based in Kerry Sports Academy. We will have use of the Dance Studio for classes, society meetings and practising for competitions. The Hall will open up many more opportunities for us and then all students will be guaranteed to have all their exams before Christmas. There is so much more that comes with passing this plebiscite so I would urge you to vote “Yes” on the 18th of November. Remember this facility is for all students regardless of their ability.
What do I get if I vote “Yes” on the 18th of November & the plebiscite passes?
- Full unlimited annual membership to the gym at the Kerry Sports Academy.
- Five free classes per week.
- Five guest passes to the gym to bring a friend or family member.

I will be voting “Yes” on the 18th of November, Kerry SportsAcademy is a fantastic facility and €95 is an amazing price for a full annual membership. You can mind your health & wellbeing for a whole year for the price of a shared taxi into town on a Thursday night.
Thomas Kearns, Health & Leisure 3rd Year & IT Tralee SUSports Officer
IT Tralee has needed a facility like the Kerry Sports Academy for a long time, finally students have access to the type of sports centre they expect when going to college. I think €95 is a small price to pay per year so I will be voting “Yes”.
Sarah Redmond, 3rd year Nursing
As a member of societies we can often be left without spaces to hold exhibitions, performances or even just to meet and host our activities & meetings. While the KSA is primarily a sports building it is also a practical space for Societies to use, that’s why I am voting “Yes” on the 18th of November.
Mike Edgar - Computing With Games Development 4th year & IT Tralee SU Societies Officer
I am not a regular gym goer as I can’t afford to pay the membership fees on offer locally. KSA offers great value for money at €95 per year and I know for certain that if I have membership I’ll be more likely to use it. I can’t wait to start getting fit, that is why I am voting “Yes!”.
Jenny Watton, Event Management 2nd Year
As a final year student I wish I could have had access to the KSA throughout my studies, it’s a fantastic base for our sports clubs. I’m voting “Yes” on the 18th of November as I want every studentto have the opportunity to use it in the future and I’d like to take advantage of the alumni rates once I graduate!.
