National Science Week

The Institute of Technology, Tralee offers an exciting programme for the 2004 Science Week which starts on November 8th 2004. The extensive programme is aimed at primary, secondary and third level students, with the overall objective of encouraging greater interest in careers in the science field.

The ITT programme kicks of on Monday 8th with a lecture and demonstrations titled "Who Wants to be a Scientist?", which takes place at the ITT South Campus. According to Dr. John Treacy of the ITT there has been excellent interest in this particular event, with the 2 pm sessions fully booked, with limited places still available at the 11 am and 7 pm sessions. This lecture also runs on Tuesday, with all sessions fully booked.

Pat O 'Callaghan from Reagecon, a Shannon based company will also visit the ITT on Tuesday where as well as awarding a prize to the best first year chemistry student he will present a paper on the "Laboratory Supplies Business in Ireland".

On Wednesday November 10th, commencing at 9.30 am, a Primary Schools Exhibition opens at Balloonagh School which is open to the public. All are welcome to attend. Also on the 10th as part of the extensive programme taking place at Presentation Primary School, Tralee Dr. Michael Hall a biochemist at the ITT will give a talk titled 'Simple Science' to 4th class students.

ITT activities move to Siamsa Tire on Thursday 11th November where a lecture titled "Show me What you,re Made Of" takes place at 11 am and 1 pm. The regional final of the ISTA Science Quiz also takes place at the ITT South Campus on Thursday, with the ITT series of events concluding during the Institute Open Day on November 15th 2004 with a lecture and demonstration titled "May the Force be With You" taking place at the North Campus at 11 am and 2 pm. Leaving Certificate students studying Physics, Biology and Engineering should find this lecture extremely interesting.
