RFID4SME Ireland - Live and Interactive; Embracing Technology Wed, Mar 28, 2007

Have you ever had difficulty in tracing and controlling your inventory? Looking for a solution and how information technology can assist you in your business? If so then why not attend the

RFID4SME – Ireland Live and Interactive Conference

which takes place on

March 28th

in the Woodlands Hotel, Adare, Co. Limerick.

Hosted by the Wireless and Mobility Research group from the Institute of Technology Tralee (ITT) this event will provide an opportunity for Irish companies to hear from top industry leaders in the area of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID while also giving attendees the opportunity to network and share ideas with speakers and fellow
companies.

The aim of the conference is to show how RFID can benefit companies in areas such as Manufacturing, Transportation/ Logistics, Health Care/Pharma, Retail and Aerospace/Defence. Delegates will learn about key applications, including track & trace and asset tracking. Demonstrations on the day will also provide practical examples of how RFID technology is used by companies in their daily operation.

The keynote address will be given by Mick Keyes a Senior Solution Architect with Hewlett Packard a Senior Architect. Case studies on the application of RFID will also be presented by Oracle, eFast, Automatic Labelling and Kerry County Council among others.

Ed Sheldon, Head of Wireless and Mobility Strategic Research, Institute of Technology, Tralee said: “Many businesses that currently use barcodes may benefit from attending this conference. The Wireless & Mobility Research Group at the ITT currently support innovative use of tags that allow items, cases, pallets and even vehicles to be identified without the use of a barcode scanner. RFID tags use radio frequency (RF) to identify individual items and companies are currently requiring their suppliers, many of whom are small companies, to use RFID on a large scale. Use of RFID technologies in innovative ways can also help companies gain a competitive advantage.”

The ITT is a leader in the application of RFID technologies with the Wireless and Mobility Research group working closely with industry both nationally and at a European level.

The conference is being offered free of charge to companies in the region, but prebooking is essential. Further details are available at

What is RFID? Is this a new technology

A method of automatic product identification currently been analysed and researched is called Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). RFID technology can be used to locate, track, analyse and uniquely identify inventory using electronic tags and wireless readers. In general RFID tags are small storage devices that can hold a significant amount of digital information, this stored data is then accessible using an RFID interrogator or reader, and the stored information in the tag can be accessed if the tag is positioned within the read field of the reader. RFID has some important characteristics that provide an advantage over bar code technology in many situations.

The general concept of RFID is not a new technology; it has been used in various forms since World War II, where allied aircraft were fitted with electronic transponders to alleviate the possibility of friendly fire. In recent years major advancements in the Ultra High Frequency (UHF) range, has enabled the suitability of RFID for auto-identification requirements in a product supply chain, and has the potential to over-take and replace existing technologies.
