Why join a Society?
While Clubs refer to sport and physical activities Societies refer to the arts, music, social awareness and general interest groups. Societies and Clubs are the bedrock of student’s active involvement in campus life and getting involved will enhance your college experience beyond the academic realms. Active participation in Societies can give you the opportunity to develop existing skills or to try something new. It can provide a lively social life, good friends that last a lifetime, and many memories to treasure. Active involvement is also a welcome break from academic studies and real boost to future careers as you gain many transferable life skills that will set you apart from other applications in a an interview or work environment.
What is a Society?
Education is so much more than developing academic skills. It is also about interacting, socialising and developing friendships. A society is a voluntary group coming together for this purpose. These groups set out specific aims and undertake certain activities. Each Society has a Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer elected each year. The Chairperson is primarily the organiser in the group, ensuring meetings are held and that everyone is aware of the aims & objectives of the society. The Secretary takes minutes and deals with correspondence, while the Treasurer is responsible for accounting for the society finances.
Societies at ITT
The ITT promotes a large number of societies to help you have a good time and get to meet new people. There is a broad range of activities in the Institute to choose from and the range is increasing yearly. All societies strive to increase membership so you are always welcome to contact the Societies Officer if you are interested in signing up. The Societies Officer is available to assist in getting societies off the ground, organise activities and source funding. Fund-raising is an important part of society development and the Societies Officer will assist with ideas and organisation.
