Hi and welcome to the best Institute of Technology in Ireland, and more importantly welcome to what hopefully will be the best and most exciting experience of your life. When you gained entry to IT Tralee, you not only became a college student you also became a member of the Students’ Union. As a member of the Student’s Union you are now part of a larger body that are represented by us, the Students’ Union Executive.
As all of the Officers were students of the college at one time or another, we have been elected through our peers to represent students of I.T Tralee on a full time basis for a 1 year term. This puts us in a prime position to make your time here more rewarding, academically and socially.
Who do we work for?
It’s very simple; we work for you, the student.
Who are we?
Well, my name is Katie and I am the Students' Union President. As president, it is my responsibility to make sure that both our offices in the north and south campus run to their best possible potential to give you the best and most informative college experience possible. I also act as the chief link between the Governing Body and Academic Council to make sure your needs are being met at all levels.
Ciara's role as welfare officer is to be as informed as possible about the health needs of students be it mental or physical health. Ciara provides a great link with the Counsellor, the Chaplain, the Access Officer and the Nurse. These links are vital because there is always someone available to help. Ciara also liaises very closely with the landlords in the area and is responsible for accommodation enquiries.
Scotty is the Education Officer. His role is to help students with any issues that may arise in relation to study or grants. Scotty also liaises very closely with the Admissions Office, Exams Office and Student Services Office to find answers to financial, education, fees or exams questions that students may have. He plays a vital role in the training of Class Reps and will work tirelessly throughout the year with Class Reps to ensure that students of IT Tralee are getting the best education possible.
We also have 5 part time officers who cater for:
Sports: Cathal O'reilly
Societies: Kieran Bolt
Equalities: Katie Ni Shithigh
Communications: Michael Thompson
Entertainments: Niall Harty
All of the part-time Officers are full-time students. As students themselves, they are working at ground level in their individual roles and communicating and working closely with the Union.
What do we do?
While we all have our individual roles we also work close together on:
• Representing and protecting the rights of students both on and off campus
• We act as effective communication between the students, the Institute, the press and the local community of Tralee of which the students are a big part of.
• We are responsible for all entertainments on and off campus. We try
our best to have this entertainment as varied as possible and thus meet everyone's taste.
• We provide a commercial service for students’ of I.T. Tralee.
How can I make the most of my time in IT, Tralee
The best way to make most out of your time in I.T Tralee is to stay informed. Inform yourself about all clubs and societies and join as many as possible. They provide a great way to make friends and are a great outlet for stress relief from studies.
Educate yourselves: The Students’ Union have information on everything you need to know about IT Tralee at all levels. The information is readily available so make use of it. If you can’t find information then we operate an open door policy so just call in anytime and we will only be too happy to help.
Get involved with the Union. You can do this by just calling in to our offices or by taking an even more proactive approach by becoming a Class Representative (Class Rep). Elected by their peers, Class Reps are a vital link with the Students’ Union in all matters surrounding students. Class Reps are well trained and are in constant contact with the Students’ Union on all matters.
Finally, to make the most of your time in I.T Tralee, please remember that you are not a number to us and it is the priority of every member of staff in IT Tralee that you are successful in every aspect of student life. So for any problem you may encounter or if you need to talk to someone, please feel free to call in to us at any stage throughout the year. Lastly, may your college experience be as rich and rewarding as it has been for me.
