The Centre for Educational Development (CED) has been established to support and advance the areas of teaching, learning and learner support. The centre will assist in the identification & dissemination of best practice through the formation of internal working groups as well as external consultation. The centre's objectives will be set by an academic steering group nominated by Heads of School and supported by CED administration.
The main activities administered through the Centre for Educational Development are as follows:
- To lead the Institute in developing blended learning policy and strategy including training and support;
- To build upon the work completed by the ITT TLU;
- To support, enhance and influence academic practice at the Institute;
- To advance various projects as they relate to teaching and learning activity;
- To facilitate the generation of pedagogical materials for excellence in teaching in partnership with the academic departments and appointed learning champions.
- To administer and manage the annual Peer Support and Teaching Awards Programmes at the Institute in partnership with other members of the Shannon Consortium.
- To organise in consultation with the HR department and/or schools/central services departments staff training relevant to teaching and learning activity. The Centre for Educational Development will be the main vehicle through which this training will be organised and administered;
- To organise in consultation with the Development Office, postgraduate training support, where appropriate in partnership with Shannon Consortium partners;
- To advance the development of learner support initiatives as they relate to academic writing, learning styles diagnosis, languages, numeracy, communication and scientific competence for students;
- To advance the development of a Learning Support Unit (LSU) at the IT Tralee and associated initiatives linked to same. This will include the development and roll-out of peer support mentoring programmes in defined subject areas, a drop-in student centre and other retention related initiatives to facilitate student success at the Institute;
- To create and encourage discussion around relevant topics;
- To disseminate information from discussions through the journal;
- To develop formative evaluation instruments through which staff can self-assess and come to TLU for support and assistance if necessary.
