Library Etiquette

Library Learning Zones

The library is a place for study and research.  It is important for all library users to maintain a quiet study atmosphere.

Following feedback from a‎nd consultation with library users, the library introduced a new Zoning system in November 2013. The key changes were the introduction of a Silent Zone in the South Campus Library and on the first and second floors of the North Campus Library. The majority of the library areas are Silent Zones, but there are also Quiet Zones and Group Zones. The Zoning system is explained below.

The rules are clearly displayed throughout the libraries.

Library Learning Zones Silent Zones

  •  No conversation permitted

Food and Drink

No food may be taken into the library.

With the exception of bottled water, no drinks may be taken into the library.  Spill-proof containers should be used and please keep drinks away from electronic sockets and equipment to prevent damage.

Library users should keep all areas tidy and must dispose of rubbish properly.

No Unattended Belongings or Reserved Seats

Personal belongings should not be left unattended.  The library cannot be held responsible for any loss of, or damage to, personal belongings.

No one may reserve library seats or spaces by leaving books, bags, laptops, or other items.

Laptops and other items, including library materials, left unattended on tables, desks, or chairs may be moved by other library users or library staff if left unattended for more than 30 minutes.

Laptop Cables and Health & Safety

Laptop cables and other cables must not be trailed across the walkways in the library as they pose a Health & Safety hazard.  Staff will unplug and/or remove unattended laptops which are in breach of this rule.

Failure to comply with library rules and regulations may result in fines or the loss of library privileges or, ultimately, disciplinary action.  Full details are available in the Student Handbook.
