Module Description/Aims:

  The aim of this module is for students to improve their aquatic teaching skills while teaching small groups of participants from the community. Students will improve their aquatic and lifesaving strokes and skill. It will prepare students for an appropriate occupational first aid qualification. In outdoor education the aim is to assist the learners in their development as independent organisers of Adventure Activities in an Outdoor Education context and in particular, in the context of the physical education curriculum.

1Demonstrate lifesaving strokes and show a level of endurance consistent with the distance for completing the bronze medallion /equivalent.
2Demonstrate competence in aquatic teaching under supervision and describe the factors influencing learning.

5Demonstrate competent first aid care of a casualty in a sport and leisure environment in a simulated exercise.

Learning Strategies
Leisure skills (Aquatics) practical :<br> The aquatic teaching element initially operates through a whole part whole, part whole and guided discovery teaching strategy. Initially it is covered through master class sessions. This is followed by students teaching small groups aquatic skills and strokes. <br>The work includes experiential learning through participating and teaching groups from the community.<br>In addition students plan and reflect on aquatic sessions for the aforementioned teaching as well as completing a logbook. The stroke development/ lifesaving element will initially further develop students technique along with endurance and introduce lifesaving strokes. Students will complete theory and practical elements of first aid. <br><br>
Leisure Skills (Aquatics) Theory:<br>The theoretical knowledge underpinning the competence and skills requirement of an aquatic teacher are taught through theory classes that refer continuously to elements covered in practical classes.<br>Teaching the subject in this manner i.e through both theoretical classes and practical enable reflective practice and reinforcement of learning.<br><br>
Outdoor Education :<br>The Learners will experience a variety of Adventure Activities and will follow the guidelines of the LEAVE NO TRACE programme.<br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br>

Front crawl, breaststroke, backstroke, sidestroke, sculling, butterfly, treading water, surface diving, diving and associated stroke laws.
Aquatic Play with a purpose and fundamentals
