Module Description/Aims:

  The aim of this module is to prepare students to complete a level one aquatic teachers award and the National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches award or equivalent.
In Outdoor Education, this stage involves developing personal experience of adventure activities and gaining knowledge of the infrastructures for provision of Adventure Activities in the country.

1Demonstrate the knowledge, competence, skills and endurance required to complete the RLSS National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches lifesaving training/standards or equivalent.
2Plan, design, safely implement and reflect on aquatic sessions for a variety of abilities.
3Demonstrate the knowledge, skills and competence required to complete and attain a swimming teachers (level 1) course/award.
4Describe the benefits of adventure activities in the social and physical development of children.
5Identify the role of adventure activities in the development of lifelong leisure interests.
6Demonstrate competent first aid care to a casualty in a sport and leisure environment in a simulated exercise.

Learning Strategies
Practical: The students will get the opportunity to teach a variety of ability groups and on completion will be competent aquatic teachers (/level 1). The work includes experiential learning through participating and teaching groups from the community, peer observation and reflective practice. <br>Students will further develop their lifesaving skills to the RLSS National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches standard or equivalent.Students will complete the theory and the practical elements of outdoor education. Core texts were identified to meet the requirements of the learning outcomes of the course.<br>
Theory:The theoretical knowledge underpinning the competence and skills requirement of an aquatic teacher and lifesaver are taught through theory classes that refer continuously to elements covered in practical classes.Teaching the subject in this manner i.e through both theoretical classes and practical enable reflective practice and reinforcement of learning<br><br>

Lifesaving Rescues principles, category of casualty, stand off position and reverse, accompanied and assisted rescue, landings, entries, escape techniques.
Rescues and towing techniques, recovery and support of casualty.
Resuscitation - land based and in water, after care, mock incident practice.

Assessment Strategies

The assessment of this module is 50% continuous assessment and 50% final exam.


Students must pass their level 1 aquatic teaching award to pass the year.
