Prerequisite Knowledge:

  ASA/UKCC/IWS/Swim Ireland Aquatic Teachers certificate (level 1) & National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches standards /equivalent. Aquatics 1 and 2

Module Description/Aims:

  The aim of this module is to assist the learners in their development as leaders, organisers, lifeguards and teachers of aquatic activities. It will prepare students for the ASA/UKCC/IWS/Swim Ireland level 2 aquatic teachers certificate and National Pool Lifeguard Award.
This module is designed to assist the learners in their development as independent organisers of Adventure Activities in an Outdoor Education context and in particular, in the context of the physical education curriculum. This second stage looks at building the capacity of the learners to plan an adventure activity day with skilled providers or leaders who will deliver the programme.

1Demonstrate teaching skills and styles appropriate to a variety of ability groups and individual needs.
2Explain the principles of lifeguarding, swimming pool supervision and aquatic development, along with techniques associated with dives , starts and turns.
3Demonstrate skills/techniques and endurance as a foundation towards the National Pool Lifeguard qualification.
4Plan and deliver a basic adventure activities programme for their peers.
5Plan and execute review sessions for adventure activities using active reviewing techniques.

Learning Strategies
Leisure skills (Aquatics) practical : <br>The aquatic teaching element operates through a whole part whole, part/whole and a range of teaching styles. The students gain experience teaching aquatics skills and strokes to a variety of ability groups from the community.The stroke development/ lifeguarding element will further develop students technique and endurance. This is followed by the development of skills applied to the principles of lifeguarding. Students will partake in an outdoor education option. Core texts were identified to meet the requirements of the learning outcomes of the course<br><br>
Leisure Skills (Aquatic) Theory:The theoretical knowledge underpinning the competence and skills requirement of professional lifeguards and aquatic teachers are taught through theory classes that refer continuously to elements covered in practical classes.Teaching the subject in this manner i.e through both theoretical classes and practical enable reflective practice and reinforcement of learning<br> <br>
