Module Description/Aims:

  The aim of the module is to assist learners in their development as leaders, organisers, lifeguards and teachers of aquatic activities. Students will enhance their own development and that of the participants they teach from the community. It will prepare students to complete the ASA/UKCC/IWS/Swim Ireland aquatic teachers certificate (level 2), the National Pool Lifeguard Award and give students experience of Pool Plant Management.

4Demonstrate the knowledge, skills and competence required to complete and attain an aquatic teachers (level 2) award/ equivalent.

Learning Strategies
Leisure skills (Aquatics) practical : The aquatic teaching element operates through a whole part whole, part/whole and a number of teaching styles are used. On completion the students will be competent full swimming teachers (level 2). The work includes experiential learning through participation, teaching groups from the community, peer observation, stroke analysis and reflective practice. In addition students plan and reflect on sessions for the aforementioned teaching as well as completing a logbook. Students will develop skills applied to the principles of lifeguarding and swimming pool supervision leading to the completion of National Pool Lifeguard qualification training. Core texts were identified to meet the requirements of the learning outcomes of the course<br>
Leisure Skills (Aquatics) Theory:The theoretical knowledge underpinning the competence and skills requirement of a full swimming teacher (level 2), professional lifeguard and pool plant operator are taught through theory classes that refer continuously to elements covered in practical classes.Teaching the subject in this manner i.e through both theoretical classes and practical enable reflective practice and reinforcement of learning

Chemicals used in pools and their properties
Application of pool plant
Filtration Process - Types of filter, relative advantages/disadvantages
Visit and explanational tour of local swimming pool plant room
Water Type and Characteristics - Testing for pH, Chlorine (free total, combined), calcium hardness, alkalinity, total dissolved solids, recording water temperature. Balancing of water Palin test and Langelier test.
Ventilation Systems - Visit to leisure pool plant room, (using ozone/HTH, recycling of air systems.

Assessment Strategies
The assessment of this module is 50% continuous assessment and 50% final exam. Students must pass their full (level 2) Aquatic/swimming teachers.
