Module Description/Aims:

  To facilitate the student's development as a critically reflective practitioner, achieved via their application of theoretical knowledge in the deconstruction of their practice. The module will also enable the students to develop an understanding of contemporary Critical Incident (Emergency) Planning.

1Examine the social, cultural, economic and political influences which impact upon meeting the developmental and educational needs of children.
2Integrate theoretical links to practice, including cross-curricular learning.
3Deconstruct learning achieved in practice using an ERA (experience, reflection and action) model of reflection.
4Demonstrate an ability to organise ideas coherently in writing and apply appropriate academic and professional writing conventions.
5Source, evaluate, summarise and reference information in accordance with academic and/or professional practice (critical thinking/reading).
6Identify what constitutes a critical incident (both traditional and contemporary meanings) and understand the processes involved in the construction of Emergency Preparedness Plans.

Learning Strategies
This module involves the development of competence in both theory and practice through critical reflection on the students' practice experiences.
The focus of the module will firstly be the presentation of the theory for critical reflection and, secondly, for Critical Incident (Emergency) Planning. The focus of the portfolios will be the application of theory in the deconstruction of a critical incident (traditional meaning).

Introduction to Critical Reflection• Reviewing and consolidating models of reflection e.g. Kolb, Gibbs, Johns.
• Exploring what is meant by 'critical reflection': facilitating students in identifying, questioning, and challenging their own values and assumptions as part of critically reflective processes.
• An exploration of how power/power dynamics impact upon practice.
• The application of theoretical perspectives in the deconstruction of a placement experience (individual and group).
• The integration and linkage of cross-curricular learning and the curriculum guidelines for children under six (Aistear, Siolta, Aistear -Siolta Practice Guide) in critically reflective practice e.g. 'Signposts for Reflection' in Siolta.
Introduction to Critical Incident (Emergency) Planning• Identifying the contemporary meaning of critical incidents.
• Identification of what constitutes an emergency situation.
• An exploration of the roles and responsibilities of stakeholders in emergency planning and response.
• An examination of the preparation and development of Emergency Preparedness Plans by a Critical Incident Management Team (CIMT) and an identification of Critical Incident Procedures.
