Prerequisite Knowledge:

  Learners entering this programme would be required to have an understanding of outdoor learning with a minimum of 2 years¿ experience working as a full or autonomous outdoor animator in an outdoor workplace/setting

Module Description/Aims:

  The module aims to prepare students to deliver therapeutic outdoor adventure experiences for specific populations promoting the development of individual potential, full inclusion, enjoyment and success.

Learning Strategies
Formal lectures will be used to guide the learners through the foundations of the theory associated with this module.
Online lectures will be available throughout the term to provide guidance on material suitable to be delivered in this format. Guest speakers from the world of OE and Youth work will present.
Online tutorials will be run during the term at regular intervals. The lecturers and learners will be able to explore areas identified in lectures/online lectures and to support the application of this theory at the workplace of the learners.
Four days of practicals will create opportunities to explore the practical application of the theories of Adventure Therapy in an OE/Therapeutic setting.
Learners will work, through directed learning, to analyse the Adventure Therapy and practices at their workplaces and will identify possibilities for change or development in their personal Outdoor Learning practice.
Learners will be engaged in self-study activities; reading, researching, collaborating and exploring aspects of Adventure Therapy.

Assessment Strategies
E-PORTFOLIO: The learners will submit an electronic portfolio of material generated from their AT interventions with a variety of special population groups. This portfolio will include photographs, video diary, lesson plans and an electronic reflective journal. The journal will indicate how the learners practice was informed or challenged by the theories and practices identified during the completion of the module.
Practical Teaching: Learners will design (group work) an adventure programme with a therapeutic focus . Learners will complete a thorough risk audit and identify an appropriate risk management system. The session will be evaluated using a standardised research instrument. The capacity of learners to engage openly and honestly in the process of the AT programme will be assessed by the lecturing staff while participating in a class based AT programme over two days and one evening.
