Prerequisite Knowledge:

  Learners will have personal competency in living/ travelling or engaging in sports in a natural environment. (Canoeing, sailing, mountain walking etc.). They will also have specialised knowledge of how to lead a group and manage safety in an outdoor environment. Learners entering this programme will have proven ability to animate groups while working in an ¿outdoor learning¿ environment.

Module Description/Aims:

  The aim of this module is to enable the learners to develop a range of theoretical and practical strategies to assess and evaluate their OE based experiential programmes. A key element of this learning will include developing a capacity to identify ¿High Quality Outdoor Education practices¿ as identified by the UK standard, HQOE. Learners will also review the literature defining common practices in the evaluation of experiential education programmes.

Learning Strategies
Formal lectures will be used to guide the learners through the foundations of the theory associated with this module.
Online lectures will be available throughout the term to provide guidance on material suitable to be delivered in this format
Online tutorials will be run during the term at regular intervals. The lecturers and learners will be able to explore areas identified in lectures/online lectures and to support the application of this theory at the workplace of the learners.
A webinar and a one day seminar will create opportunities to explore case studies of the application of High Quality Outdoor Education in OE settings in Ireland.
Learners will work, through directed learning, to analyse the High Quality Outdoor Education practices at their workplaces and will identify possibilities for change or development in their personal OE practice.
Learners will be engaged in self-study activities; reading, researching, collaborating and exploring aspects of HQOE and the evaluation of OE programmes.

Assessment Strategies
REPORT:
Learners will produce a status-report on the development of HQOE practices in their workplace. The learners will identify how practices at their workplace meet the HQOE criteria and where there is room for development. A proposed action plan for development will be identified.
PORTFOLIO:
Learners will submit the results of a battery of evaluation and assessment tools examining OE programmes and practices at their workplace. Learners will draw on the input of fellow staff members and of learners/ clients attending at their workplace.
