Module Description/Aims:

  In this module students are introduced to:
¿ the core ideas, theories, terminology and language necessary to begin an interdisciplinary exploration of the knowledge fields lying at the conjunction of the health / wellness and leisure domains, their importance from a health perspective and how these are applied in the design of disease prevention and wellness enhancement programmes
¿ a suite of practical laboratory exercises and activities focusing on a range of instruments and procedures used in health, wellness, physical activity / fitness and health related lifestyle assessment (stress and diet)
¿ experiential learning and familiarization with selected practical content with a mind-body integration theme:Yoga Stretch, Tai Chi, and other selected relaxation modalities

On successful completion of the module, the learner will be able to:

1Demonstrate familiarity at a basic level of competency in the use of key concepts and their definition (health, wellness, flourishing, positive psychology, happiness, disease, medicine, lifestyle, leisure, physical activity, fitness, etc.), articulated orally in discussion forums and in writing assignments evidenced by, the appropriate contextual use, of the terminology.
2Identify broad commonalities and make distinctions in meaning between the concepts orally and in written exercises including reflective practice worksheets
3Distinguish between strengths and deficits based approaches to health and between reductionism and holism and demonstrate this discriminative capacity in the examination of specific intervention programmes.
4Explain how particular lifestyle intervention programme goals & content are influenced by their underlying framework in terms of paradigms, theories / models and definitions.
5Demonstrate a competency to structure and lead practical lifestyle intervention programme content at an introductory level by designing and leading elements of a session.

The student will engage with the content of the module through a mixture of lecture, discussion forum activities and reflective practice exercises.
Students will take part in literature searches and examine the structure of a typical primary source review article from the field.
