Module Description/Aims:

  In this module students will undertake a study of the relationship between lifestyle factors and health. They will examine those important degenerative diseases with a strong lifestyle link, for example; cardiovascular disease, cancer, obesity and diabetes and the principal lifestyle elements typically targeted in disease prevention and wellness enhancement programmes, in the areas of nutrition, stress and physical activity. The students will also engage in laboratory activities and exercise studio based practical sessions focused on nutrition, stress management and health related physical activity.

On successful completion of the module, the learner will be able to:

1Explain the historical and economic factors which led to the emergence of lifestyle as a key health determinant and a major cause of disease
2Cite, from examples, some of the pivotal research findings relating lifestyle behaviours to health status
3Identify the key lifestyle health risk behaviours and health goals as annunciated in major health policy documents
4Explain the pathological and salutogenic processes associated with diet, substance misuse, stress/mental health and physical activity in relation to the leading causes of mortality, morbidity, longevity and quality of life.
5Explain the argument for adopting a 'strengths based' approach to life-style enhancement through sport and physical activity, in parallel with disease focussed approaches
6Engage meaningfully, in a variety of experiential learning and familiarization activities focused on personal development through lifestyle enhancement in the following areas;(a) stress mng & relaxation (b) nutrition & weight mng. (c) active living & fitness and demonstrate a competency to complete a flourishing score (d) substance misuse (e) sexual health
