Department: Creative Media and Info Tech Module Code: MEDA91001
Level: Level 9 Contact Hours: 24
Duration: 1 Semester Directed Study Hours: 2
Effective Term: 2011/12 Indep. Study Hours: 74
Credits: 5

Prerequisite Knowledge:

 None

Module Description/Aims:

The aim is to provide an awareness of emerging technologies that are seen to be significantly altering the practice, distribution and consumption of media. The learner will critically analyse their own work within this context, with a view to developing innovative work and work practices in the other production oriented modules. In itself, this is not a production module; its intent is to foster critical thought and discussion on the value and potential value of relevant media technologies.
The technologies will be grouped under `parent¿ topics (video / Audio / HCI for example) which will be used as an entry point from which related topics can be explored. For example video, as a parent topic would look sub topics such as stereoscopic cinema, compression algorithms and economic implications of proprietary video players

The technologies are examined from different perspectives:
¿ A societal / cultural perspective; how they affect us or may ultimately affect us as individuals as individual media users and as a collective.
¿ A technological / functional perspective; how and where the technology evolved from and what other technologies are integral to their makeup; how they are radically different from related technologies.
¿ A professional perspective; how the technologies can be used to aid in the creation, distribution and promotion of a professional body of work which incorporates issues such as intellectual property ownership.
¿ A convergent perspective; A significant how media technologies are converging on both societal and technological levels

On successful completion of the module, the learner will be able to:
No. Description/Learning Outcomes
1Identify and analyse new technologies before or as they become mainstream, their component parts and their impact on the greater media sector
2Debate future evolutions in media and their potential impact
3Identify technological opportunities presently available to them in digital content production and distribution
4Enhance the depth of analysis of technologies that will become integral to their major project (in parallel development in the Studio modules)
5Position a number of technologies within wider context of media production i.e. video as web / mobile / broadcast / installation based / virtual and augmented ? technology

Learning Strategies
The material is delivered as a combination of lecture and discussion. The group?s size (approx. 20 ? 25) allows for interaction and the sharing of opinion and information. The lectures will provide sufficient material to facilitate the learner in pursuing further independent research into the technology.
The lectures will be part of a blended approach which will take the following forms
? Lectures shared by ITT staff
? Lectures delivered remotely by experts in other institutes
? Lectures delivered in class and / or remotely by experts from the media sector / industry
The learner will engage with the researching of topics through a blog. The blog can serve as a platform that utilises social media tools (YouTube, Twitter etc.) As such the learner will be communicating with a) other students b) external media practitioners and experts while recording and communicating their research appropriately through the various multimedia channels (video ? YouTube, audio ? SoundCloud etc.)

Assessment Strategies
On-going continual assessment
In order to assess the learner•s on-going engagement and critical awareness of the topics discussed, they will be required to maintain a weekly online report in the form of a blog where they will respond to lecture topics, articles supplied to them by lecturers and any articles that they themselves have sourced independently.
These will be reviewed periodically by the relevant lecturers involved in the module depending on their area of expertise
The final submission is a detailed technological analysis directly related to the learners chosen area of production as laid out in their pre-production document for the Studio Practice module. The learner will submit the written component as part of the Studio document and also present a to the group using multimedia and real-world examples of the chosen technology.
Repeat assessment:
The learner will submit a written in depth analysis of their chosen technology or technologies. They will also present the findings to the lecturers (15 minute Viva)
