Module Description/Aims:

  This module is designed to prepare the learners to engage in outdoor and experiential learning activities as a leader and a peer tutor.

The minor elective of aquatics will develop the student's competence in teaching special populations to participate in water activities; to move independently in water, and to swim.

2Offer guidance and feedback to a fellow learner as a peer tutor on high rope courses and walking trails.
3Demonstrate paddling skills on enclosed areas of flat water and apply navigation techniques in this environment.

5Plan, design, implement and evaluate group sessions using Halliwick games and activities
6Apply Halliwick teaching techniques to special-needs populations to build water competence and confidence

Learning Strategies
Learners will experience a number of Adventure Activities in an Outdoor and Experiential Learning context.
Learners will be facilitated in review and reflection upon their outdoor learning experiences.
Learners will attend lectures on the theory of OE and its role in school curricula and the wider community as well as weather forecasting and risk assessment.
The aquatics minor will be taught through lectures and pool based practicals. In the practical sessions, students will work in pairs and in groups developing their competence in teaching activities from the halliwick tenpoint programme.

Assessment Strategies
A minimum attendance at practicals of 80% and achievement of 40% in practical assessment is required.
Learners will compile a portfolio of materials including their reflective journal, session plans and details of participation in class practicals and fieldtrips.
