Prerequisite Knowledge:

  Learners will have personal competency in living/ travelling or engaging in sports in a natural environment. (Canoeing, sailing, mountain walking etc.). They will also have specialised knowledge of how to lead a group and manage safety in an outdoor environment. Learners entering this module will have proven ability to animate groups while working in an ¿outdoor learning¿ environment.

Module Description/Aims:

  The aim of this module is to support learners in their pursuit of a diverse practice which will encompass aspects of Outdoor Learning development from different cultures. The module aims to bring the learners in contact with cutting edge developments in Outdoor Learning and therefore promote the vision of excellence and innovation in Outdoor Learning and Outdoor Education

Learning Strategies
Formal lectures will be used to guide the learners through the foundations of the theory associated with this module
Asynchronous online lectures / material will be available throughout the term to provide guidance on the subject
Synchronous online tutorials will be run during the term at regular intervals. The lecturers and learners will be able to explore areas identified in lectures/asynchronous resources and to support the application of this theory at the workplace of the learners
A webinar and one day seminar will create opportunities to explore case studies of the application of teaching and learning theories in Outdoor Learning settings in Ireland. Guest speakers from the world of OL/OE and PE will present.
Learners will work, through directed learning, to analyse the Outdoor Learning practices at their workplaces and will identify possibilities for change or development in their personal OE/OL practice.
Learners will be engaged in self-study activities; reading, researching, collaborating and exploring aspects of teaching and learning outdoors.

Assessment Strategies
PORTFOLIO: The learners will submit a portfolio of material generated from their analysis of programmes or activities at their workplace. The portfolio will include an appraisal of the OE activities and a diagnostic assessment of standards used to guide practice. A plan indicating how innovations may be adopted to enhance the work at the centre will be included and the implications for pupils and instructors/tutors/teachers.
POSTER:
Learners will present a poster appraising the challenges to their OE practice from a standards based approach. They will analyse their personal OE practice and identify how it may develop to integrate more diverse strategies and concepts from other cultures of OE. They will account for at least one aspect of change in their future OE practice and support that change using material from this module.
