Module Description/Aims:

  This Module aims to bring students to a level of competence in the planning, delivery and evaluation of individual and group exercise sessions in the exercise to music and gym environments with healthy adults using a whole-part-whole approach. Students will participate in practical exercise classes incorporating the following elements, exercise to music, step, circuits, weights, cv machines, stretch and body conditioning. The knowledge, competence and skills required to operate as a basic level instructor in the exercise to music and gym environments will be achieved (European Health Fitness Association Basic Level Instructor).

A further aim is to provide the student with a detailed understanding of the factors that affect performance, the components of field testing and training methodologies for performance. The module also requires students to apply theory in a practical setting focusing on individual and team sporting requirements.

1Plan, deliver & evaluate a variety of products and services skills in the areas of exercise to music, step, stretch training and body conditioning, free weights, machine weights and cardiovascular machines for healthy adults.
2Illustrate and practically demonstrate through the use of effective communication skills the key pedagogical and motivation skills underpinning programme design.
3Adapt or progress an exercise session/programme to cater for specific needs of an individual or group.
4Demonstrate proficiency in the design, organisation and management of a training session
5Demonstrate proficiency in the assessment of physiological fitness in the field setting
6Discuss and demonstrate proficiency in the use of a variety of stretching types to improve flexibility

Learning Strategies
This AL programme operates on the principle of whole-part-whole teaching/learning strategy, with four 5 credit standard attainment benchmarks. Students cover; exercise to music, step, weights, cv machines, stretch and body conditioning. Master class sessions are followed by 3 blocks coving the 6 modalities where students have the opportunity to gain competency in small group work in each area building towards integrative product development at the end of year 2. Team teaching will be used, 3 staff members will deliver the 2 of the six areas each, students rotate around the 3 groups in blocks of 12 weeks. All staff members will be involved in team assessing at the end of year 2. This encompasses choreography, music selection, cueing, experiential learning through teaching & participating, peer observation & effective feedback, reflective practice. Students complete a log of commercial classes completed attended. Students are also required to reflect on the classes they attend.
Performance training - The practical aspect will be delivered through experiential learning and reflection on data collected. T

Assessment Strategies
Practical Activity Leadership. Students to complete 1 of the following 1. ETM & Step: 2. Free & Machine Weights & CV Machines; 3. Stretch & Body Conditioning
Students must also submit a log demonstrating attendance at six exercise classes outside of schedules college classes
Performance Training: The practical component requires students to complete a final practical assessment
Students must achieve a minimum mark of 30% in the final practical examination in Activity Leadership Modules. Less than 30% is considered an extreme weakness and the practical exam must be repeated.
Repeat assessment strategy:Where student has met minimum requirements for attendance he/she may be offered the opportunity to repeat practical components and to submit written assignments. This will be determined on a person by person basis.

Students must achieve 60% to be eligible for REPS register
