Module Description/Aims:

This module focuses specifically upon trends in the fitness industry and to bring students to a level of competence in the planning, delivery and evaluation of individual and group exercise sessions. This is done in the context of exercise to music and gym environments with healthy adults using a whole-part-whole approach. Students will participate in practical exercise classes incorporating the following elements, exercise to music, step, circuits, weights, cv machines, stretch and body conditioning. The knowledge, competence and skills required to operate as a basic level instructor in the exercise to music and gym environments will be achieved through the outside accreditation of EHFA (European Health Fitness Association Basic Level Instructor).

Given that the fitness industry constantly evolves as it is influenced by new trends in the contemporary, global culture, it is important that the students become familiar with the changes in fitness practices and be able to critically evaluate the meaning of new fitness forms.
The theoretical aspect of the module will also focus on issues around commercialism, consumerism and commercial fitness promotion and how these shape the actual fitness practices. Exploring the evolution of trends and forecasting trends is also a central theoretical element. As trends will change it is expected that new skills with represent either a stand-alone product that students will gain experience and competence in the delivery of or new techniques that students can integrate into their current movement vocabulary for product development. In addition students will be required to critically review and substantiate or otherwise claims made about fitness trends.

Assessment Strategies
Product development culminates in students designing and implementing a full exercise session in the gym and studio environment. Students will complete the EHFA Fitness/Group Fitness Instructor Level 3 assessment. Two examiners are present for each assessment; students who do not reach the pass standard are offered the opportunity to be reassessed.
Repeat assessment strategy:Where student has met minimum requirements for attendance he/she may be offered the opportunity to repeat practical components and to submit written assignments. This will be determined on a person by person basis.

Students must achieve a minimum mark of 30% in the final practical examination in Activity Leadership Modules. Less than 30% is considered an extreme weakness and the practical exam must be repeated.
