Prerequisite Knowledge:

  Learners entering this programme would be required to have an understanding of outdoor learning with a minimum of 2 years¿ experience working as a full or autonomous outdoor animator in an outdoor workplace/setting

Module Description/Aims:

  The module aims to prepare students to deliver adventurous Outdoor Learning activities for specific populations with special needs or disabilities promoting the development of individual potential, full inclusion, enjoyment and success.

Learning Strategies
Formal lectures will be used to guide the learners through the foundations of the theory associated with this module.
Asynchronous online lectures will be available throughout the term to provide guidance on material suitable to be delivered in this format. Guest speakers from the world of Outdoor Learning, Youth work and further education will present.
Synchronous online tutorials will be run during the term at regular intervals. The lecturers and learners will be able to explore areas identified in lectures/online lectures and to support the application of this theory at the workplace of the learners
Four days of practical fieldwork/supervised teaching practice will create opportunities to explore the practical application of the theories of Adapted Adventure Education in an OE/Therapeutic setting
Learners will work, through directed learning, to analyse the Adapted Adventure Education practices at their workplaces and will identify possibilities for change or development in their personal OE practice
Learners will be engaged in self-study activities; reading, researching, collaborating and exploring aspects of Adapted Adventure Education

Assessment Strategies
E-PORTFOLIO: The learners will submit an electronic portfolio of material generated from their AAE interventions with a variety of special population groups. This portfolio will include photographs, video diary, lesson plans and an electronic reflective journal. The journal will indicate how the learners practice was informed or challenged by the theories and practices identified during the completion of the module.
PRACTICAL TEACHING: Learners will design (group work) a programme of adapted adventure activity. Learners will complete a thorough risk audit and identify an appropriate risk management system. The competence of learners will be assessed by lecturers on the course while students assist on adventure activity sessions with client groups from disability services.
