Prerequisite Knowledge:

  All requirement for EHFA Basic Instructor

Module Description/Aims:

  This module aims to bring students to a level of competence in the knowledge and skills required for personal training and older adult exercise planning, prescription & promotion. Students will practically experience the following skills required for personal training: client screening and assessment, fitness testing, planning specific programmes based on the individual needs of the client, understanding and implementing modifications required for special populations, implementing strategies to support exercise adherence, posture analysis/injury prevention, nutritional and lifestyle management, promoting and managing your own business, demonstrating appropriate communication skills for working in a one-to-one situation. Students will apply the above skills during a 6 week free personal training initiative for staff at the I.T.T.
Students will practically undertake the following activities, with emphasis on delivery to an older adult population: short mat bowls, croquet, pitch and putt, petanque, walking programmes, strength, balance & flexibility sessions &, chair exercise.

Learning Strategies
Practicals involve small group work where students practise the skills required for personal training with their peers. Programme planning for special populations is carried through the case study method. Students carry out 6 weeks free personal training for staff at the I.T.T. which provides effective experiential learning for working as a personal trainer. Students engage in weekly reflective practive on this work to capitalise on the learning experience.<br>Students engage in practical activiy sessions with older adult groups where insight to this group's attitude, & motivation for exercise is witnessed and reflected upon via practical activity log. Activity logs following each specific practical session are written up to reflect teaching points, safety points, & modifications for injury.<br>

Descriptions of Ageing, health fitness categorisationsHealth fitness categorisations are examined with descriptions of ageing based on chronological, functional & attitudinal aspects explored
Functional consequences of ageing is addressed with reference to the cardiovascular, skeletal, joint & muscular physiological systems
Older adult pre-exercise screening Exercise specific health challenges for the older adult are examined & modifications identified
Common medications particular to the older adult and their impact on exercise prescription, monitoring & adherence are explored
Tests of physical function - The Senior Fitness Test protocol by Rikli & Jones is utilised as a protocol
Maintatining health & safety for the older adult exercise environment is highlighted throughout

F.I.T.T. principles for older adult exercise prescription F.I.T.T. principles are prescribed for all activities undertaken
Students partake in the following specific activities: short mat bowls, croquet, pitch and putt, petanque, challenge games, walking programmes, strength/balance/flexibility sessions & chair exercise

Assessment Strategies
The assessement for this module is 70% CA and 30% final exam. There are a total of 4 pieces of CA. The following elements are assessed.

Practical: Students are required to work as a personal trainer with a client over a 6 week period and are observed doing this work
Portfolio of work which may consist of the following: file, essay and/or presentation reflecting on the theoretical and practical learning from the personal training work with the client.

Practical log: Sport/activity session log book. 5% attendance is part of log.

Essay based on the theoretical comcepts covered in the module.
Students are required to attend 80% of all practical sessions
