Module Description/Aims:

  The module aims to increase students¿ understanding of the areas of history and philosophy of Physical Education which is essential for their development as physical education teachers. Students will engage in the history of Physical Education both internationally and within Ireland from its earliest form to the current curriculum and policy developments within Ireland. Students will explore primary philosophical principles of education and Physical Education and will study the purpose of Physical Education and advocate for its inclusion in schools. Students will also interact with several theories of Physical Education teachers¿ role and appreciate how these values can influence their and others teaching practices.

Learning Strategies
Lectures will provide the theoretical understanding of the content covered in each of the syllabus areas. It will introduce the students to the content and give them a cognitive understanding into each of the concepts.
Tutorials will provide the students with an opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge gained in the lectures to a practical setting. I will enable students to engage in discussion and debates regarding the subject content delve further into the content covered in the lectures. Students will actively engage in critiquing the provision of PE internationally and within Ireland, investigate various advocacy resources for PE and create their own and will apply the various theories of teacher?s values and role perception to their own context.

Assessment Strategies
Having studied the importance/value of Physical Education and it's presence is school curricula in Ireland and internationally students will be required to develop an advocacy tool which advocated the inclusion of Physical Education in schools.
Having studied the various models of teaching values/socialisation and how that influences teaching practices students will conduct a case study on one teacher where they investigate their Occupational Socialisation, Value Orientation or Role Conflict and describe how it influences their teaching style/practice.
The final written exam will cover all aspects of the module and all learning outcomes. The exam will use a number of structured exam questions which will assess the students understanding of all areas of the module.
