Module Description/Aims:

  This module aims to enable students to work competently with children to develop fundamental movement skills through the medium of fundamental games, dance and gymnastics. Students will understand the underlying principles of motor skill development and acquisition and apply these principles in the design and implementation of a fundamental movement skills session. Students will also explore movement principles in creative dance and gymnastics using conceptual, tactile, kinaesthetic, aural and visual stimuli. Students will demonstrate the analytical ability to recognise skill deficiencies and design and appropriate programmes of learning.

Learning Strategies
Delivery will involve lecture, practical, planning and delivery of sessions;<br><br>Lecturers will provide the theoretical underpinning of the module area, while the practical session will enable the application of motor development, motor learning concepts, movement stimuli and movement principles.<br><br>Students will complete the Irish Sports Council Code of Ethics and Good Practice for Children's Sport training (3-4hr workshop)<br><br>Students will demonstrate their ability to assess, peer teach, adopt and adapt, progress, correct, analyse and interpret, and provide constructive feedback in safe activity environments<br><br>Self-evaluation and peer evaluation will be used to facilitate learning<br>

Assessment Strategies
Knowledge and comprehension of module concepts will be assessed by written examination at the end of the semester and will include short answer questions, teaching application questions
Practical class learning outcomes will be assessed through the design, delivery and reflection of a practical Fundamental Movement Skills lesson.
A minimum attendance at practicals of 80% is required
