Module Description/Aims:

  This module aims to prepare students to plan, organise, teach, coach,direct and choreograph, and lead activities for Physical Education programmes at Junior and Senior Level and within the Leaving Certificate Applied programme that include dance/direction, adventure activity and aquatic based activity.

On successful completion of the module, the learner will be able to:

1Design a syllabus, schemes of work and lessons plans as part of a Physical Education programme
2Plan, organise and teach a range of Musical Theatre and aquatics or outdoor education activities
3Assess Musical Theatre pieces from direction/ choreography-based perspectives
4Improvise individually and in group situations while adhering to theatrical scripts
5Having completed a two-day Mountain Skills training programme in hill walking, navigation and camp-craft students will be able to programme, plan, supervise and lead a multiday visit to an Outdoor Education Centre, a basic orienteering event, a variety of team based adventure games and exercises, a camp-craft session, and basic lessons in the principles of the international Leave No Trace programme with groups of adults or children.
6Having completed a swimming teacher training programme students will be able to plan and lead aquatic activities including mini-polo, key aquatic skills and activities for stroke development, synchronised swimming, snorkelling, diving and modified games.

Learning Strategies
The module will have a theroetical element and a practical application of the theoretical element in planning syllabii, schemes of work and session plans in the areas of theatre/dance, aquatics and outdoor education. The ability of the student to teach these activities will be the main focus of the work. Experiential learning through participating, leading and teaching, small groups work, master classes, in-class teaching practice/workshop sessions to peers groups (and where possible with other groups) and critical review of own and peers performance will be some of the learning/teaching strategies employed

Two-day Mountain Skills training programme in hill walking, navigation and camp-craft

• Theoretical aspects of water polo, key underpinning aquatic skills, synchronised swimming, diving, modified games, issues related to teaching non swimmers, equipment use
Practical aspects relate to:
• The swimming teachers award
• Teaching activities for stroke development including key underpinning skills- safe entries and exits, floating, breath control and initial submersion, regaining the standing position, sculling, streamlining, transition to deep water, including practices to lead to treading water/ treading water
• Games related to a variety of ability groups
• Diving / early practices for diving
• Synchronised swimming and snorkelling
• Mini-polo

Assessment Strategies
Assessments will include the development of syllabii, schemes of work and session planning in the areas of the Physical Education and Arts covered in the module, reflective journal/logbook, practical teaching
Repeat Assessment Strategy: Where student has met minimum requirements for attendance he/she may be offered the opportunity to repeat practical components and to submit written assignments. This will be determined on a person by person basis
