Department: Manufacturing Engineering Module Code: PROJ81031
Level: Level 8 Contact Hours: 42
Duration: 1 Semester Directed Study Hours: 0
Effective Term: 2014/15 Indep. Study Hours: 58
Credits: 5

Prerequisite Knowledge:

  None

Module Description/Aims:

A project based module to design, manufacture and test a simple product.
The projects will consist of the analysis, modeling, and design of engineering systems and components, rapid prototyping and testing of designs. The student will apply CAE tools, e.g. simple geometry and solid modeling and finite element analysis (FEA) to their specific application. This module provides the student with the opportunity to synthesize and extend the skills and knowledge acquired during their engineering education toward design (or redesign) of a product. The projects may be done individually or by teams.

Learning Outcomes show detail >>

On successful completion of the module, the learner will be able to:
No. Description/Learning Outcomes
1Build on their prior education by applying specific design tools such as computer aided engineering (Creo) and finite element analysis, Minitab etc and integrating the knowledge gained from other modules.
2Define a project specification outlining specific tasks, milestones and deliverables required to carry out the engineering design.
3Build / fabricate a working scale model to demonstrate the validated models for its performance compliance with the desired specifications.
4Develop their ability to construct experimental plans using statistical design of experiments (Minitab).
5Develop their ability to effectively communicate the product design process - both verbally and in writing.
6Identify gaps in their knowledge and be responsible for integrating new knowledge to bridge those gaps.

Learning Strategies
The learner is expected to draw on previous learning and synthesis it to develop a well rounded project.
The learner is responsible for identifying gaps in their knowledge and be proactive in bridging those gaps.
The project supervisor will provide support to the student by means of a fortnightly meeting, where the student will present evidence of work completed to date and get sign off on their project diary.
