Module Description/Aims:

  The aim of the module is to provide the student with an understanding of the psychological impact of disability on children and their families, and with insights into a range of psychological issues, the first signs of which appear in early childhood.

1Identify the early symptoms of disabilities and disorders which may affect children in the care of the Early Childhood professional.
2Evaluate academic and policy documents relating to atypical development in early childhood.
3Produce an academic paper which takes a critical approach to psychological theory and research.
4Acknowledge the impact of physical and psychological disabilities on children and their families.
5Support children who are at risk of poor outcomes arising from genetic and environmental risk factors.
6Understand how diagnostic tools such as the DSM V are used to gather information about childhood psychological disorders.

Learning Strategies
Online material will be accessed by the students, containing lecture presentations with voiceover, exercises, video links and links to journal articles.
Online and face to face tutorials will be used to discuss and elaborate upon materials accessed online, and to prepare students for assessments and examinations.
Students will be provided with the skills to critique academic research in the light of their own experience in early childhood practice.

Risk factors in child development.Genetic and environmental risk factors and their potential impact on a child's psychological well being.
Protective factors which may mitigate the effect of risk factors.
Diagnosing childhood disorders.Assessing children for developmental disorders.
Diagnostic tools: the DSM 5.
Distinguishing developmental delays from disorders.
Differentiating specific and general learning difficulties.
Language disorders.Diagnosis, signs and symptoms.
Risk factors.
Recognizing language disorders in preschool children.
Causes, prevalence and impacts.
Specific learning difficulties.Learning disorders with impairment in reading, mathematics, written expression.
Developmental coordination disorder.
Assessment, causes, signs and symptoms, impacts.
Internalizing disorders.Anxiety disorders, e.g generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, OCD and PTSD; causes, symptoms, prevalence, impacts.
