Department: Health & Leisure Studies Module Code: RSRH71003
Level: Level 7 Contact Hours: 60
Duration: 1 Semester Directed Study Hours: 28
Effective Term: 2014/15 Indep. Study Hours: 12
Credits: 5

Prerequisite Knowledge:

  Research Methods: Measurement Concepts

Module Description/Aims:

This module will build on concepts examined in Research Methods: Measurement Concepts and examine common statistical methods employed when handling numerical data that is not approximately normal and non-numerical (categorical) data. Students should be able to make appropriate decisions about the type of statistical analysis to be undertaken in a given context.

On successful completion of the module, the learner will be able to:
No. Description/Learning Outcomes
1Differentiate between Qualitative and Quantitative research approaches
2Explain the rationale for selection of appropriate statistical tests
3Conduct statistical tests using SPSS or equivalent and Interpret the findings
4Differentiate between the primary qualitative research approaches
5Utilise a variety of qualitative research methods including observation, interview and focus groups
6Undertake qualitative techniques to analyse non-numeric data and decide on the the most appropriate method to use in a given context

Learning Strategies
The student will engage with the content of the module through a mixture of lecture, tutorial and practical work. This module will contextualise core statistical content to their field of study throughout and apply the content to real life problem solving situations. Where possible data generated in other modules will be analysed. The approach will make use of context-specific problems and SPSS laboratory sessions to practice the procedures.
