1Critically appraise the scale & scope of volunteering in Irish society;
2Comprehend and explain the role that volunteers play in the development of social capital;
3Analyse the skills and knowledge levels required to work effectively in a voluntary organisation, as a 'civic servant', and internalised same as applicable for future development
4Interpret and convert their service learning engagement to inculcate a wider civic dimension to their educational experience
5Demonstrate self awareness through reflection, of student's own communication style, personal development, ability to team-work, negotiate, problem-solve, motivate self/others and conflict manage.

Learning Strategies
This module is delivered using a combination of lectures, guest lectures & tutorials. Theoretical aspects are presented in lecture format
Students volunteer with an organisation/agency/project, whereby they will learn experientially, each bringing individual experiences back to the classroom, for sharing with their peers. Students may elect to undertake their engagement during term time, (a minimum of 12 weeks) or may engage with a voluntary organisation over the summer vacation, which also facilitates overseas volunteering.
Tutorials in group format will allow for cross transfer of voluntary organisation/agency/project on site learning; Discussion on practices, issues, problems etc. experienced will be enabled, with helpful solutions encouraged. Individual tutorials will also facilitate lecture support to students, on a case by case basis
The DEAL model of critical reflection will be utilised, with associated critical thinking tools and rubrics.

Assessment Strategies
Assessment is 100% Continuous Assessment. This involves completing a reflective journal of evidence of work engaged in when volunteering, (using DEAL assessment rubric) (30%); preparatory personal development plan material submission (25%); Graded tutorial contribution (20%); while a final presentation to class peers, tutors & host organisations on personal development, academic learning & civic learning accounts for the final aspect of assessment (25%).
