Module Description/Aims:

  The aim of this module is to introduce the student to the historical origins, philosophy and development of community and youth practice in Ireland and internationally with the intention that they will be in a better position to reflect on their own practice. Students will be presented with an outline of the different approaches underpinning youth and community work in Ireland and abroad with a view to helping them reflect on their current practice and consider how these perspective can be incorporated into future practice.

Learning Strategies
Face-to face lectures will be used to guide the learners through the foundations of the theory associated with this module and complement the synchronous and asynchronous delivery.<br><br>
Online lectures will be available throughout the term to provide guidance on material suitable to be delivered in this format<br>
Online tutorials will be run during the term at regular intervals. The lecturers and learners will be able to explore areas identified in lectures/online lectures and to support the application of this theory at the workplace of the learners.<br><br>
A Webinar and a one day seminar will create opportunities to explore case studies of the application of teaching and learning theories in OE settings in Ireland. Where appropriate guest speakers from the world of OE and Youth/Community Work will present.<br><br>
Through independent self-directed learning, students will analyze the Outdoor Learning practices at their workplaces and will identify possibilities for change or development in their personal OE practice.<br><br>

• Community Work Roots: Informal self-help and solidarity, Mutual Aid , Philanthropy and voluntary service.
• Colonial community development. The US War on Poverty, The UK Community Development Project, Muintir Na Tire, EC Anti-Poverty Programmes, CDPs, Health Board Community Work.
