Prerequisite Knowledge:

  Students should have experience of involvement with an organisation/club/agency/project in a voluntary capacity, prior to undertaking this module.

Module Description/Aims:

  This module enables students to engage with a pre-selected project/club/agency/organisation in a leadership capacity. Each year specific leadership projects are negotiated with both ITT Department and Community partners, for example, the HSE, Jigsaw, the Student Union, Sports Office, Access Office etc. Students will define, observe, analyse and practise leadership skills, in a service learning environment, while shadowing/working with a designated IT Tralee staff member, community leader, over the duration of semester 5. The course will help students to reflect on the meanings of community, service, civic responsibility and leadership, as they work in these areas.

1Critically examine various types of leadership and their characteristics.
2Recognise and analyse personal leadership styles and determine how these styles will affect them personally and their interaction with others;
3Analyse and evaluate various theoretical frameworks of leadership from a real world perspective;
4Forge meaningful partnerships with people in communities through engagement with IT, Tralee staff and students, and/or community organisations/agencies/partnerships;
5Engage in active discussion regarding leadership, civic responsibility and community service engagement.

Learning Strategies
This module is delivered using a combination of lectures and tutorials. The lectures focus on leadership & motivation theoretical aspects, understanding civic engagement & social responsibility, social capital enhancement, while the tutorials assist in the blending of theory and practice as the students progress through their volunteering involvement with selected agencies.

Assessment Strategies
Assessment is based on 100% CA. This includes presentation of an experiential journal (30%); attendance at all workshops/tutorials/seminars & graded contribution (20%); an out of class assignment (25%) and a presentation to peers, tutors & host organisations on their leadership and community service experience & learning (25%).
