Module Description/Aims:

  The module aims to develop ethical standards of leadership in sport and physical activity contexts that promotes an ethos of nurturing. This module will examine theories of positive youth development with an emphasis on the scope of physical activity and its associated practices in the promotion of developmental assets. The challenge of fostering mutually beneficial relationships between youth and their social settings, with an emphasis on those facilitating sport and physical activity i.e. schools and communities will be explored. The module will balance theoretical explorations and the development of practical youth leadership skills.

Learning Strategies
This module will use a range of teaching and learning methods to enable the student to develop a theoretical and practical understanding of the principles of positive youth development (PYD). The practical workshops and tutorials will facilitate student learning in respect of the interpersonal and intrapersonal skills required to create an inclusive and nurturing environment for all young people in a sport and physical activity context. The lectures will engage students in the evidence base informing the PYD paradigm.

Assessment Strategies
A combination of assessment techniques to reflect the theory/practice balance in the module will be facilitated. Clear criteria for assessment will be communicated to the students in advance. Assessments will incorporate both unseen written challenges and reflective assignments
