What is Mental Health Nursing

The primary objectives of mental health nursing are to facilitate the maximum development of the mental health of the individual who has mental health problems and to promote mental health. A major focus of mental health nursing is to work with individuals, families and communities in intervening and preventing mental health problems so that as many as possible can live full lives in community settings and to support those already living in the community.

At the heart of the role of the mental health nurse is the ability to establish therapeutic relationships with individuals and their families. The mental health nurse uses his/her own personality and communication skills to form and maintain these relationships.
